Opéra de Baugé is an international opera festival, now in its eighth year, which offers its own, new, fully-staged opera productions each season. Each year a programme of 3 operas (usually one early/baroque, one by Mozart and one 19/20th century) is performed. Performances take place in a theatre which is specially erected at Les Capucins, Baugé, a historical property dating to the sixteenth century. The theatre is enclosed, so the weather does not interfere with the performances, is comfortable and has a fine acoustic. Opéra de Baugé takes pride in offering fully authentic performances of its operas with a full-sized orchestra and chorus as well as fully-staged productions with sets and costumes. Its productions are almost always set in the period in which the drama took place and are faithful to the texts of the libretti. Performances generally start at 6pm, with a interval of 90 minutes to permit members of the audience to picnic in the park of Les Capucins or to dine in the restaurant in the manor house (advance booking required). Many of our patrons bring their own picnics, some of which are extremely elegant, and it is also possible to order picnic hampers in advance. Opéra de Baugé has achieved and maintains an artistic and musical level of performance which is comparable with that of leading festivals and opera houses across Europe. The festival is made possible by the dedication of a group of enthusiastic volunteers who carry out a wide variety of work, from design and production of costumes to dealing with patrons on the telephone and welcoming them on their arrival at Les Capucins. |
